Why We Need to Stop Child Marriages Now!

According to reliable data, a girl under 18 is married every two seconds on this planet. This needs to stop. Child marriage is a serious problem that snatches away children’s happiness and gives them responsibilities they can’t be expected to take on. In India, child marriage is a societal evil that must be eliminated. Here are some good reasons why we need to stop child marriages now!

  • It Ruins Childhood

Child marriages should be stopped because they ruin the childhoods of both young boys and girls. They are expected to take responsibility for another person at an age where they can’t even take responsibility for themselves. It’s worse for girls as they are expected to take care of everybody’s needs and do countless household chores.

  • It Leads to Abuse

Child marriages often result in abuse, especially when the age gap between the wedding couple is high. Often, young girls are sold to men twice or thrice their age in the name of marriage. It often results in physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse of the children from a very young age. This abuse can impact their health and well-being drastically.

  • It Stops Education

Often, when children are married at a young age, especially young girls, their education is stopped. They are expected to learn to cook, clean, and keep everyone in the home happy. They either get no time to educate themselves or their in-laws stop them from attending school. They often end up being dependent on their husbands for their financial needs for the rest of their lives.

  • It Leads to Deaths

Child brides are often expected to start bearing children as soon as possible. Their consent is often not required or needed by their husbands and in-laws. As a result, they become pregnant when they are not physically capable of giving birth, which often leads to their or the baby’s death.

  • It Impacts Future Generations

Child marriages don’t affect one generation. It can affect many generations in the same family. Adults who were married off as children sometimes don’t consider it a societal evil and push their children into child marriage.
